In the build up to the Miami Grand Prix, Lando was in attendance at a Polo Ralph Lauren event in the city. He was there promoting the Pole Red fragance at the company he’s an ambassador for.
Lando entered the event smiling, cheering and waving at fans. He then jumped on a racing simulator to put in a few laps of a virtual F1 car around the Miami International Autodrome circuit.
Later in the event there was a chance for a Q&A between Lando, the presenter and the fans. At that moment, one of the fans starting singing a song to Lando which he was all too familiar with, for all the wrong reasons.
The song was ‘It’s Friday then’ which became synonymous with Lando after he sang it on the radio to his McLaren engineer during FP1 at the Tuscan Grand Prix.
Since that fateful moment in FP1, the song has followed Lando everywhere he goes. Fans chant it all the time when they see Lando. BBC Radio 1’s Greg James plays the clip of Lando singing it every Friday morning at the start of his breakfast show.
Lando revealed that he was only supposed to sing the first line “It’s Friday then” and his teammate at the time, Carlos Sainz, was supposed to sing the second line on his team radio “It’s Saturday Sunday what”. But Sainz had car issues so couldn’t head out, meaning Lando had to do the whole thing solo.
But now Lando’s had enough of it. At the Polo Red event in Miami, just at the fan started singing it Lando shut them down. Watch his response in the video below:
Lando said he hates the song so much, and that it’s haunted him ever since he first sung it. As he said in his own words, it’s time for him to get something new.
When asked what kind of music he did like, he said Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door by Bob Dylan was one of his favourites. Maybe he’ll bust out the lyrics to that one on the team radio next time he wins a race.
