why rent a car at the Nurburgring?
There’s a few reasons why Nurburgring car rental may be a good option for you:
- If you are flying in to Germany from overseas and want to get behind the wheel yourself on the Ring, then hiring a dedicated track prepared car from one of the companies listed below is the best option.
- Your own car may not be suitable for track driving. The Ring is the most demanding circuit in the world and even one lap can take its toll on your car. Unless you have the latest from BMW’s M division or Porsche’s RS range, or you’ve track prepared your own car, chances are your standard car is not fully up to the job. For peace of mind, Nurburgring track rentals that have already had their brakes and tyres upgraded for the Ring are a smart way to go.

Beware big excesses on high-end rentals. This M2 from RSR Nurburg has a 50k Euro excess!
- You want to drive something sportier than normal. A number of the companies listed below offer some serious performance cars for rent – BMW M3s, Porsches and Nissan GTRs are all available for hire, and maybe you want to experience something over and above the performance of your daily driver. Want to rent a Ferrari at the Nurburgring? You can do that too. If you’re new to the Ring we wouldn’t recommend going for a big power rental car, instead something low powered and grippy like one of the Suzuki Swifts from Rent4Ring is a perfect starter option.
- You don’t want the third-party liability risk. All the Nurburgring car rental companies below will have full third-party insurance, so in the event of an accident where you’re to blame you will not have to cover third party costs (such as damage to other people’s vehicles). You will, however, still have to cough up for barrier damages. And you will also have to pay a pretty large damage excess on the car – more on this below.

The Suzuki Swifts from Rent4Ring are huge fun for not-huge prices
can I just take my avis rental on the ring?
No. Do not be tempted to take your standard hire car you just picked up from Avis, Hertz, Europcar or one of the many other road car hire companies on to the Ring. Doing so will invalidate the insurance you have through the hire car company.
Whilst there’s nothing physically stopping you doing it, most hire cars are now fitted with GPS trackers. So if something were to happen and you were to damage the car on the Ring then they could see you’d been thrashing their brand new 1.2 Polo around the Green Hell. They’d invalidate the insurance (as per the contract you signed when you hired the car) and hold you personally liable for the car repair costs. Not worth the risk.
There is also a story of someone taking their Hertz rental for a sedate lap of the Ring without incident or damage, only to be slapped with an additional fine of over 1000 Euros upon returnng the car. Hertz had found out the car had been on the Ring and invalidated their insurance, even they did no damage.
All of the providers listed below have cars designed, built, modified, insured and licensed for you to specifically drive around the Nurburgring.
are rentals available for tourist driving or track days?
Both. Most of the providers below have options for Nurburgring car rental on either Tourist Driving days or private track days. Check out their pricing options and you’ll see that the costs will differ slightly between the two.
Some car rental packages (usually the more expensive ones) will come with a free passenger lap, driven by a Nurburgring pro in one of their faster cars. These are usually incredible experiences and completely rearrange your perception of just how fast you can go, so bear this in mind when looking at booking.
how much does Nurburgring car rental cost?
When looking at car hire options there are a number of different costs to consider:
- The car hire itself. This is usually a per-lap price for TF, or sometimes a per-KM price for track days. Prices are either basic (just the car hire) or all-inclusive (with lap tickets and fuel).
- The collision excess. Hopefully this is one you won’t have to pay. Every car you hire will come with a damage excess – this is the maximum amount you can (and probably will) be charged in the event of an accident (it’s usually up to roughly 50% of the car’s value). Make sure you are fully aware of what this cost is, and whether you can afford it, before you chose to hire that Porsche with a 100k Euro excess rather than the BMW E36 with a 9000 Euro excess.
- Lap tickets to drive during Touristenfahrten. On tourist driving, basic car rental packages won’t include the cost of individual lap tickets. In this case you also need to add on the price of a lap (30 Euros weekday, 35 euros weekends).

You can even rent a Tesla Model 3 Peformance from Ringfreaks…
- Track-day cost. If you are attending a track day with your rental car, you also need to add the cost of registration on the track day to your overall spend. See our post on Nurburgring track days for a list of providers and everything you need to know.
- Extra drivers. Some of the companies listed below will allow two people to drive the car for no extra cost, but any more than that and there may be a supplementary fee. Always ask about this if you a planning to share a car with your petrolhead pals.
- Instruction. Some of the Nurburgring car rental companies require you to drive your first lap with one of their instructors, usually for an additional 50 Euros or so. Sometimes a couple of laps instruction may be included as part of the rental package when going for more expensive options.
- If you decide to flout the Nurburgring drifting rules and return the rental car with no rear tyres, there might be an additional conversation to be had.

…complete with track-spec interior.
- Armco barrier damage costs. Whilst you will be insured for third-party damages to other driver’s cars, you will not be insured for any damage you cause to the barriers or other Nurburgring track infrastructure.
- Additional insurance. Some of the rental companies offer an additional level of insurance for an extra fee, to either reduce the damage excess you pay (sometimes by up to 50%) or by covering armco barrier damage costs up to a maximum amount. For an extra couple of hundred Euros this could end up saving you thousands, so worth enquiring about.
- Fuel. Some companies offer all-inclusive packages which include fuel costs, others don’t. If you need to bring the car back with a full tank check out our list of Nurburgring petrol stations. Or if you hire the Tesla for the day from Ringfreaks then maybe you need to give it some juice between laps – if so check out our list of charging stations near the ‘Ring.
list of nurburgring car rental companies
We have compared all of the companies currently offering rental cars at the Ring and listed them below. As a comparison we have looked at the price of 2-laps of tourist driving in their cheapest car and ordered the list accordingly.
Some companies offer basic laps (fuel and lap tickets excluded), some only offer all-inclusive laps. For all inclusive laps we are assuming 60 Euros for 2 lap tickets, plus 25 Euros for fuel for 2 laps, so 85 Euros extra.

Thanks for the article. Why so few mercedes benz for rent?
Hey Felipe, thanks for the comment. Mercs aren’t favoured as quite as good out-of-the-box track cars until you get to the AMGs which are more expensive to run, hire and insure. Things like BMWs, however, even the non-M models are easy to make in to capable track cars.
Alex
Once when I did the Scuderia course for a few days at Nürburgring, Mercedes was there to let us try their GTS and GTR cars… on paper, I think it was weaker than my 720s, but oh boy I just had none of the control I was used to. Before I knew it, I ran out of track and was suddenly in the gravel, and I thought I was being careful. I have never even been close to go into the gravel in the mclaren, but in the Mercedes I slid out second lap lol 😂 scary machine!
Great post compiling it all togheter!! Congratulations!
I’d just take the Big Garage out as I believe it’s a scam.
Hey Jan, thanks for the comment. I have reached out to BigGarage but not had a response. Please can you explain why you think that?
Any update on this? Why is it a scam. & was interested in using them.
I never had a response from them, I don’t think they’re in business any more.
was BigGarage not from Mischa who owns Apex now?
I think that was Ring Garage with all the colourful stripey hire cars.
Thanks for such a great site and all of the insight. Do any of the renters offer 4-seat rental cars?
Hey Chad thanks for the comment. Try EVN Ring Rentals and RSR Nurburg – they offer more standard road cars that are more likely to have 4 seats. Check with them before you book whether you are allowed back seat passengers too.
Also, if you want a 4 seater for a Ring Taxi lap, check out Ring-Taxi’s M5 CS or Getspeed’s Audi ETron RS.
Thanks for the tips! If I confirm any 4-passenger rentals I’ll share it here.
Hello Chad,
At NürbLife we have a Leon Cupra 290 with rear seats, plus semi-slicks, track brakes and lightweight wheels! 🙂
What’s the best way to get to the Nurburgring? Renting a normal car and driving there? Any tips?
Where are you coming from? There are other articles in the Nurburgring section about Flying to the Ring, which includes info on the best airports to get to and then getting hire cars, and also public transport (which is pretty difficult). If you get a normal hire car to drive to the Ring, don’t take it on track!
Nice post, really helpful information. Thank you for sharing this one!
I’d like to see someone making a Taycan (and a Ioniq 5 N once they come out) available to take on the ‘ring.
I’m sure it won’t be long before we see some more electric rentals cars at the Ring. Or maybe Hyundai will use the Ioniq 5 N as their new Ring Taxi…
