An Executive Order has been signed by President Donald J. Trump launching the Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C. The event is scheduled for August 21–23, 2026, and will form part of the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations.
According to the Executive Order, the White House Task Force on Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday has been directed to designate a race route through Washington, D.C. and the National Mall. The Department of the Interior and the Department of Transportation have been instructed to issue all necessary permits, approvals, and authorisations as expeditiously as possible to plan, prepare for and conduct the event.
The race will mark the first time a major motor race has been staged in the Nation’s capital near the National Mall. The administration has stated that the chosen route will “showcase the majesty” of Washington’s iconic monuments while celebrating both America’s independence and its long-standing motorsport heritage.
A Milestone Moment
President Trump described the race as a milestone moment for American motorsport. “I am pleased to announce the Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C.,” he said via the Executive Order. “This race, the first motor race ever to be held in our Nation’s capital near the National Mall, will showcase the majesty of our great city as drivers navigate a track around our iconic national monuments in celebration of America’s 250th birthday.”
He added: “For over one hundred years, American INDYCAR racing has set the pace for motorsports. With speeds topping over 200 miles per hour, the cars and drivers inspire awe and respect in all who watch this quintessentially American sport.”
The event will form the 15th round of the 2026 IndyCar schedule. It is not yet known whether other rounds of the calendar may need to be sacrificied to make room for this new event. There have been rumours of the Milwaukee event dropping to just one race, but that has not yet been confirmed.
INDYCAR has held a central place in American sporting culture for more than a century. The Indianapolis 500, staged annually on the Sunday before Memorial Day, remains the world’s largest single-day spectator sporting event, attracting crowds of more than 350,000. Often referred to as “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” the event serves as both a sporting landmark and a tribute to the United States Armed Forces.
Roger Penske, Chairman of Penske Corporation and owner of INDYCAR, welcomed the announcement. “President Trump has bestowed an incredible distinction upon our sport, and we’re grateful for his trust and support as INDYCAR prepares to honor our country with a tremendous racing spectacle,” Penske said. “This will be a truly memorable event that celebrates our country’s independence and the legacy of patriotism, innovation and excellence that powers motorsports across America.”
In a letter addressed to President Trump following the announcement, Penske described the Freedom 250 as “a big day for our country and for INDYCAR,” adding that it would bring “incredible economic value to Washington D.C.” He thanked the administration for its support and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to stage the event in the capital.
Free Public Access and National Broadcast
Organisers have confirmed that the street circuit event will be free to the general public, with vantage points offering views of several of Washington’s most recognisable landmarks. As with all NTT INDYCAR SERIES races, the Freedom 250 will be broadcast live on FOX Sports to a national network audience.
Eric Shanks, CEO and executive producer of FOX Sports, said: “There’s no better place to celebrate America’s independence than in our nation’s capital, and no better way to showcase that spirit than through INDYCAR – a sport built on speed, innovation and competition. Bringing this race to Washington, D.C. during America’s 250th birthday is a powerful way to honor our past while celebrating what’s ahead.”
Mayor Muriel Bowser emphasised the potential economic benefits of the event. “Soon-to-be the home of every major sports franchise, Washington, D.C. is the undisputed Sports Capital,” she said. “The race weekend will rev up the economic engine of D.C. by filling our hotels and restaurants and by showing visitors, residents and the sports world that there’s no better city, people and backdrop for major sports events.”
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy described the event as a natural fit for the anniversary celebrations. “Freedom doesn’t ring, it revs! INDYCAR is about competition and pushing limits — the same things that have always defined America,” he said.
Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum added that the department was proud to help bring the event to Washington, describing it as a “monumental event that captures the American spirit in the heart of our nation’s capital.”
A Landmark Addition to the 250th Celebrations
The Freedom 250 forms part of a broader programme of events planned to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary. The administration has previously announced initiatives including the Great American State Fair, the Patriot Games, a UFC event at the White House, the revival of the National Garden of American Heroes, and plans for a new Independence Arch in Washington, D.C.
Full details of the race route are expected to be unveiled during a forthcoming kickoff gathering. Organisers have indicated that further information regarding ticketing zones, hospitality packages and community programming will follow in the coming weeks.
