Lando turned up to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in another classic sports car. This time it was fully chrome and made quite the noise…
Lando's car collection
Driving F1 cars for a living means that most normal road cars are going to feel slow and boring for someone like Lando. Thanfully for him, his hefty salary means that he has a couple of quid floating around to spend on some pretty exceptional road cars.
His collection is one of the finest of all the F1 drivers. And it includes some cars that you probably wouldn’t expect a driver like Lando to own. These include his one off, custom Retro Defenders Land Rover Defender.
If the Defender isn’t whacky enough, then the car he used to use as his daily driver in Monaco is even more out-there. A Fiat 500 Jolly recreation.
Lando does also own some faster road cars. Being a driver for Mclaren it’s no surprise that one of the fastest cars in bis collection is the McLaren 765LT Spider.
This one was customised for Lando by Mclaren Special Operations (MSO). They gave it a bespoke blue carbon paint scheme and custom interior designed for their F1 driver.
Lando’s collection doesn’t stop there. As we’ve already seen he likes his classics just as much as the more modern stuff. And he owns what some consider to be the most beautiful car ever made, a Lamborghini Miura.
To make this car even more special, Lando’s was customised with a bespoke dark blue paint job and orange leather interior. Although it’s not the most reliable, as he found out when taking it for a spin around Monte Carlo.
To top it off, Lando also owns a Porsche Carrera GT in a one-off dark green, and most recently he was spotted driving his new Ferrari F40.
Now Lando’s turned up at the track in something a little more striking.
Lando Norris' Shelby Cobra
Lando turned up to the 2024 British Grand Prix at Silverstone in a chrome Shelby Cobra. Lando had been spotted in the Cobra in the past, but last time he was seen in it it was blue with white stripes down the middle.
This time, however, Lando had done away with the blue and white and had the car fully wraped in chrome. Some people were speculating that it wasn’t a wrap and it was instead polished alumnium bodywork, but that wasn’t the case.
The car was wrapped by Cardusio who posted about working on Lando’s car shortly after the British GP.
The original Shelby Cobra, introduced in 1962, is an iconic American sports car resulting from a collaboration between American automotive designer Carroll Shelby and British manufacturer AC Cars.
The Shelby Cobra 427 was the final version of this car. It was introduced in 1965 and boasted a larger 427 cubic-inch (7.0L) V8, producing over 400 horsepower and capable of 0-60 mph in under 4 seconds—unheard of in its time.
Only about 260 road going original Shelby Cobra 427s were made from 1965 to 1967, making them exceptionally rare and highly collectible.
Lando’s Cobra is not one of the original 260 Shelby Cobra 427s that was produced in the 1960s. Nor is it a replica or kit car, of which there are lots of examples out there.
Instead, it’s a ‘continuation’ CSX4000 model produced by Shelby to the original design, but manufacture began in the early 2000s.
Less than 1000 of these continuation models exist, most of them with fibreglass bodywork instead of the original car’s aluminium. The Ford V8 engine in these produces over 720bhp. They still command good money and picking up one will likely set you back over £200,000.
Why did Lando have his car wrapped in chrome for the British GP? Well Google Chrome are one of Mclaren’s biggest sponsors, so it’s likely that it’s some promotion for that.
Either way, Lando was enjoying rocking up in style at the British GP. And the car sounded awesome.
